Key Stage 3
When we hear the term, ‘Home Economics’ most of us think about cooking and food. Home Economics is about much more than food however. Home Economics combines aspects of science, nutrition, cooking, parenting skills and finance. Students learn about the inter-relationships between diet, health, family, home and choice and the management of resources.
- All KS3 students receive 3 fifty minute periods of Home Economics during a fortnight. This includes a double period used for practical lessons.
- All KS3 students complete two sets of internal examinations and three Core Assessments throughout the year.
- Students are introduced to simple dishes in practical lessons in Year 8, and then progress to make more complex dishes throughout Year 9 and 10. Students learn how to use equipment and become confident when using many pieces of large and small equipment.
Unit 1: Food Safety and Hygiene
Students learn about what dangers exist in the Home Economics room, how to solve safety problems which you might come across in HE and personal hygiene in the safe preparation of food.
Unit 2: Me and My Diet
Students are introduced to the eatwell plate and develop an understanding of the negative impact of foods high in sugar and fat, and the positive impact of making healthy dietary choices.
Unit 3: Family Fortunes
Students learn about roles and responsibilities within families and what types of families exist.
Unit 1: Family Life
Students are introduced to Year 9 by continuing on from the Family Fortunes unit. The students learn about how roles and responsibilities can be reversed and the needs of individuals at each stage of the life cycle.
Unit 2: You Are What You Eat
Students are taught about various diet related disorders and how diet and lifestyle choices can enhance the risk of developing these disorders.
Unit 3: Diet and Health
Students learn about the functions and sources of the main nutrients.
Unit 1: Eat the Seasons
Students learn about what different types of food we produce within Northern Ireland and what seasonal foods are.
Unit 2: Oh Baby
Students are taught to evaluate the different methods of feeding a new born baby, weaning products available and effective parenting.
Unit 3: Special Diets
Students gain knowledge on the requirements of vegan/vegetarian diets, how diet can impact the performance of athletes and diet advice for individuals suffering from an intolerance or allergy.
All students have the option to continue with Home Economics to GCSE Level. GCSE Child Development or Occupational Studies (Food Preparation) are also offered at this stage by the HE Department.
GCSE Food and Nutrition (CCEA)
Students have opportunities to demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for providing healthy diets for family members throughout life. They will learn the different stages involved in food production and processing.
Unit 1: Food and Nutrition – External Examination (50%)
Unit 2: Practical Component of Food and Nutrition – Controlled Assessment Task (50%)
GCSE Child Development (CCEA)
Students have the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth and caring for a newborn baby. The responsibilities involved in parenting and other family roles. Finally students will learn the different stages of development such as physical, emotional, social and intellectual.
Unit 1: Parenthood, Pregnancy and the Newborn Baby – External Exam (30%)
Unit 2: The Development of a Child (0- 5 years) – External Examination (30%)
Unit 3: Investigation Task – Controlled Assessment Task – (40%)
Occupational Studies (Food Preparation) (CCEA)
This course allows students to develop a range of culinary skills as well as knowledge regarding Health and Safety within this setting. The course seeks address these areas and have been structured to encourage the acquisition and development of these skills.
This qualification is all coursework based which involves two modules – Contemporary Cuisine and Patisserie and Baking. Students will complete two pieces of coursework over two years which is the equivalent of one GCSE grade A to E.
Unit 1: Contemporary Cuisine Task (50%)
Unit 2: Patisserie and Baking Task (50%)
Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Health and Social Care (BTEC)
This course offers students the chance to obtain a qualification that meets both their individual aptitudes and interests. Prior study at GCSE in Health and Social Care is useful to students but not essential. This course is all coursework based.

- Cookery club is offered to KS3 students.
- For KS4 and 5 students the HE Department offers after school revision classes in the Summer term.
- We run a series of House Competitions throughout the year, which are very popular and enjoyable events.
- GCSE HE students enjoy visiting Loughry College in the summer term, to learn about the range of food industry courses available. Other relevant school trips and guest speakers are part of the KS3-5 learning process.
- Chef of the week is awarded to two KS3 students every practical lesson. Students receive a certificate.
Homework & Core Assessments
- 3 Core Assessment Tasks are completed throughout the academic year by all KS3 students (one each term). These vary from practical activities to written tasks.
- Homework tasks are set at the end of each theory (single period) lesson where feasible.
- Each KS3 student is provided with a progress file in year 8. All Core Assessment Tasks, home works and exam papers are stored in these files which are handed back at the end of year 10. All marks are recorded on a sheet at the front of the file to track progress.
KS4 and 5
- Homework tasks are set at the end of each theory lesson where feasible.
- Tests are set once exam units are completed throughout the year and progress is monitored.
- Independent research must be carried out for coursework/portfolio based units throughout the year.
