New way to access C2k My Documents from outside school (works with Vista and Windows 7)

February 11th, 2010 by office in Uncategorized | No Comments »

A service development is now underway to provide a new way to access school folders from outside school. The current method (known as Easylink) does not work with Windows Vista or Windows 7 and causes issues with some versions of IE (and other browsers).

The development will be implemented in phases – and the first phase is now active. This provides a new option for College users to access My Documents which will work for different versions of Windows and browsers. Further developments will enable this access for shared folders (i.e. Learning Resources)

staff and students should be aware that the option requires the download of a security package (called Juniper) and also may require the download of ActiveX components.

Please refer to information sheet A029 which can be accessed via the link below.

NI Runners Up – Make your Mark Challenge 2009 – Enterprise Competition

December 4th, 2009 by office in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Slemish College has come 2nd in the Make Your Mark Challenge 2009. This is an Enterprise competition aimed at 14-16 year olds who were given the task of “Create a cool creation using local inspiration”. Students had to come up with a viable business idea which would make money.

After winning the North East Area heats in the Make Your Mark Challenge just over a week ago, the Year 11 Business Studies team attended the NI Finals on Friday 27th November at the Odyssey Arena. The standard of entry from the other 8 schools who had reached the finals was very high, but our team gave an outstanding presentation to the judges and cruised through the questions they were asked by the Dragons.

The team were placed 2nd in NI, a fabulous achievement as 42 schools participated in the Challenge. The judges made special comment about their excellent pitch and presentation, as well as their fun and exciting proposal which they had developed. The team was narrowly beaten by Christian Brothers Grammar School, Omagh.

The prize for coming 2nd was 500 Pounds for the College, and each team member also walked away with 100 Pounds worth of shopping vouchers. The team is made up of Kirsty Wallace, Laura Kelly, Laura Devenney, Ryan McCloskey and Gavin Kernohan.

Lower 6th Go To Corrymeela

November 26th, 2009 by office in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Last week Lower 6th braved the wind and rain for their annual Residential to Corrymeela.
The purpose of the Residential is to develop the Year Group’s sense of identity, as well as explore the integrated ethos of Slemish.
Issues were explored through discussion, Art and physical activities.
Many issues were covered in group debates and there was a particular focus on Leadership during the evening sessions.
Students had the opportunity to attend Worship with the Corrymeela Community.
As ever, Corrymeela made us very very comfortable! The food was plentiful and very tasty. The Evening Quiz was as competitive as ever, and Karaoke was as cringeworthy as it was hilarious!
All in all, it was a really enjoyable trip – for staff as well as students. The highlight was Rebecca’s delicious birthday cake – kindly sent by her parents!
The 6th Form Team would like to thank Lower 6th for being such pleasant company.

The Slemish College Christmas Fair 2009

November 26th, 2009 by office in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The Slemish College Christmas Fair 2009 was one of the most enjoyable and successful events of the year. By the time the Fair began at 7.00pm on
Friday 20 November, the assembly hall was already buzzing with children of all ages, parents, staff and friends mingling and browsing the stalls. Carollers from the music department helped create a relaxed and festive mood.

Alongside the many quality local crafts and gifts, we had games, including the very tricky ‘Identify the Famous Baby’ game and the ever popular Lucky Dip.
The huge number of desirable prizes at our raffle made for lots of lucky visitors to the Fair.

No Christmas Fair would be complete without a visit from Santa himself and the old man arrived with gifts of sweeties for all the girls and boys. He really enjoyed meeting them and took note of all requests, even though he wasn’t used to the heat of the school hall! A drink of orange juice and a mince pie at the refreshment stall soon helped cool him down.

Slemish College Parents’ Council say a great big Thank You to all those who supported the Fair, including stallholders, those who donated prizes and everyone who worked so hard to make this a very successful event; and especially to everyone who came along on the night.
