Welcome to the Slemish College Under 13's homepage
The year 9 rugby team travelled to Coleraine on Monday 10th October to compete in a tournament involving nine schools from the local area. They were first drawn to play Oakgrove, Ballymoney High school and Dunluce High School.
In their first match, against Oakgrove, it was clear from the start that Slemish were the better team. Slemish were able to score at will and after a very one sided match which included tries from Philip Clements (2), Bryan Gourley (2), David McWhirter and Gavin Kernohan and conversions from Bryan Mulholland, the final score was 42 – 0. In the second group match, a tough encounter from Ballymoney High School was expected however the Slemish team worked extremely hard in the match and with some excellent forward and back play managed to comfortably win the match 38 – 0 This included tries from Phillip Clements(4), Gavin Kernohan and Gareth James and 4 conversions from Bryan Mulholland.
The final group match was a winner takes all encounter with the winners progressing directly into the final. It was played against a good Dunluce team and initially both teams seemed evenly matched, however the greater skill and technique of Slemish began to tell and eventually the tries began to come. Final score 21 – 0 with tries from Bryan Gourley, Thomas McDowell and David McWhirter with 3 conversions from Bryan Mulholland.
The final against Limavady High School was always going to be tough, the Limavady team had some strong runners and at the start put pressure on the Slemish team. The team defended well and eventually broke out to score. Two more tries followed and despite some excellent moves by Slemish no more tries were scored. Final score 19 – 0 with tries from Philip Clements (2) and Gareth James and a conversion from Bryan Mulholland.
An excellent tournament from the year 9 boys and 120 points scored with none conceded, well done to the squad which also included Andrew Burns, James McNee, Joel Mullan, Thomas Meehan, Ben Galbraith, Vincent McCorry, Daniel Fahy and Christopher Lanigan.
